  265. Internet-Accessible Library Catalogs and Databases is coauthored by Dr.
  266. Art St. George of the University of New Mexico and Dr. Ron Larsen of
  267. the University of Maryland. Dr. St. George says this document, began as
  268. an effort to provide additional service to the network community
  269. locally. However, it became apparent that the library resources were of
  270. broader appeal than that.
  271.     It contains a listing of over 100 online library catalogs and
  272. databases available within the United States and beyond. It contains
  273. listings of U.S. and international library catalogs and databases,
  274. dial-up libraries, Campus-Wide Online Information Systems, and bulletin
  275. board systems. Each listing gives a brief description of the resource
  276. and instructions on how to access it, as well as places to contact for
  277. more information. Listings include such material as Columbia
  278. University's online library catalog (CLIO), Pennsylvanias State
  279. University online card catalog system (PENpages), and the Colorado
  280. Alliance of Research Libraries (CARL) and its 25 individual resource
  281. listings of libraries and information databases, such as the Metro
  282. Denver Facts database.

  413.     volumes, and holds an extensive video library and subscribes to
  414.     thousands of periodicals and government publications.

  452.     The MELVYL catalog is the online union catalog of monographs
  453.     and serials (periodicals) held by the nine University of
  454.     California campuses and affiliated libraries. The monograph
  455.     database, which includes records for books and nonbook
  456.     materials such as maps, films, musical scores, and sound
  457.     recordings, contains over 5.5 million unique titles
  458.     representing nearly 11 million holdings at UC, the California
  459.     State Library, and the Center for Research Libraries.
  460.     Collection strengths include agriculture, dry lands,
  461.     oceanography, entomology, performing arts (especially film and
  462.     television), photography, Californiana, materials on Mexico and
  463.     Central America, 17th and 18th century British literature,
  464.     health sciences, and science fiction.
  465.  
  466.     The periodicals file, which includes newspapers, journals,
  467.     proceedings, etc., contains over 640,000 unique titles
  468.     representing over 1.2 million holdings from UC, Stanford
  469.     University, the University of Southern California, the
  470.     19-campus California State University system, and selected
  471.     other libraries.
  472.  
  473.     The MELVYL catalog also provides access to two databases of
  474.     article citations: MEDLINE and Current Contents. The MELVYL
  475.     MEDLINE database contains the current five-year file of the
  476.     National Library of Medicine's MEDLINE database, which includes
  477.     article citations and abstracts, indexed from over 4,000 health
  478.     sciences journals. The Current Contents file, from the Institute
  479.     for Scientific Information, contains one year of citations to
  480.     articles in over 6,500 journals in seven broad subject
  481.     disciplines. Use of these files, unlike the books and
  482.         periodicals files, is restricted to the UC community.
  483.  
  484.     The "DLA Bulletin" and the "Mynd of the MELVYL Catalog," two
  485.     publications describing the online catalog and its development
  486.     and use, are also available online. The MELVYL catalog also
  487.     provides access via TELNET to other remote library systems on
  488.     the Internet.

  492.     host name melvyl.ucop.edu or any of four Internet addresses

  496.     The MELVYL online catalog and periodicals file are universally
  497.     available. Access to MEDLINE and Current Contents files are
  498.     restricted under a license agreement to the University of

  526.     holdings of most UCB libraries, including the main library, the

  528.     branch libraries. The catalog is complete for monographic
  529.     holdings from 1977 to the present and incomplete for
  530.     monographic holdings prior to that date. We are in the process
  531.     of converting older monographic records, so more of these
  532.     records appear in the catalog daily. All of the serial titles,
  533.     both past and present, are reflected in GLADIS. GLADIS also
  534.     contains records for maps, manuscripts, audiovisual materials
  535.     and computer software. Circulation information (whether an item
  536.     is checked out or not) is available for some library locations
  537.     (six libraries as of September, 1989).

  966.     The online catalog system is based on IBM DOBIS/Leuven
  967.     software. The catalog contains the union catalog for 5 library
  968.     units: General Libraries (Woodruff, Chandler, and Chemistry
  969.     Libraries), Health Sciences Center Library, Law Library, Oxford
  970.     College Library, and Theology Library.

  972.     The online catalog database currently contains more than
  973.     500,000 bibliographic records, representing approximately 40%
  974.     of the total holdings. A retrospective conversion project has
  975.     been started.

  977.     The online catalog is located on host EMUVM1.CC.EMORY.EDU.
  978.     TN3270 emulation is required.

  981.     After the VM screen is displayed, press ENTER (normally the
  982.     return key) to get a CP READ. Type DIAL VTAM and press ENTER.
  983.     At the VTAM screen, type LIB and press ENTER. When the CICS
  984.     screen appears, press the PF1 key. The next screen will be the
  985.     initial library systems screen. All references to pressing
  986.     RETURN on the library screens mean to press the key which sends
  987.     ENTER (normally the RETURN key). To exit, terminate the telnet
  988.     connection.

  991.     Context-sensitive help is available throughout the Online
  992.     Public Access Catalog  with the PF2 key.  No account or
